"I don’t sing because I’m happy...... I’m happy because I sing.” William James
Milltown Singers in 2020
Like all choirs we cannot sing together at present; but we are a determined bunch. Our brilliant musical director, Mike Horth has taught us a long list of new songs on Zoom and during the summer many of us recorded a relaxed version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
In normal summers we record three songs in Woodworm Studios in Barford St Michael, but Covid made this impossible. So, armed with our recorded part track, headphones and a recorder the brave retired to a sound proof room (bedroom, garden shed, airing cupboard) to master the technology and overcome our nerves. We were occasionally interrupted by family pets wondering if we were not well (!) or kindly partners with cups of tea of or coffee and the odd chocolate biscuit (bad for the voice but excellent for perking you up after Take 15 plus).
The outcome
We have learned new skills and a respect for the likes of Michael Bublé.......I bet his shed could tell a few tales!
We needn't have worried though, our MD Mike scattered fairy dust in his studio (he spent three days editing and mixing) and we were all really pleased with and not a little relieved by the result.
Christmas 2020
Our latest venture is a recording of Somewhere in my Memory from the movie Home Alone. We hope you will take a moment to see and hear our recording. Just touch the little arrow in the Christmas scene above. We hope you enjoy it and that it adds a little Christmas joy to your year.
About us
Milltown Singers is a mixed ability singing group which started out at The Mill in Banbury around 1998.
We meet between 8.00 pm to 9.30 pm each Thursday in term time at:
The Chasewell Community Centre
Avocet Way
Cherwell Heights
Banbury
OX16 9YA
Our aim is to provide a weekly session of singing for people who may or may not be able to read music, but who like to learn and sing music from different genres, without pressure and in a relaxed atmosphere.
Our Musical Director
Over the years the choir has gained hugely in popularity and today we have over 120 members. We are extremely lucky to have our fantastic musical director, Mike Horth who took over Miltown Singers in 2012. Mike supplies all our backing tracks and rehearsal tracks so that we can rehearse and learn in our own time at home. Take a look at the 'About' page to learn more about Mike.
Milltown events
We have concerts in the summer and at Christmas and each summer we record three songs at Woodworm Studios. In August each year we also run a very popular day long workshop which is open to all comers.
